1997-98

A pilot project titled National Surveillance Program for Communicable Diseases (NSPCD) initiated & coordinated by National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) formerly National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) and was implemented in 5 districts on a pilot basis. This was expanded to 101 districts by 2004.

1998

In 1998, The Govt. of India approached the World Bank to initiate a disease surveillance project.

Sept, 2000

The project preparation commenced with a meeting at Hyderabad in September 2000, attended by representatives from Central Govt., 4 State Govt., WHO, CDC, NIH, USAID, DFID and other national agencies like NCDC (formerly NICD) and ICMR.
